Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art Expansion
at Cornell University

Ithaca, NY

Stuart-Lynn Company worked with architect Pei Cobb Freed & Partners on a three-floor above and below grade addition to Cornell University’s Johnson Museum, originally designed by the firm in 1973. The 10-story building has stunning views of Cayuga Lake, the Cornell campus and Ithaca. The architect in charge of the original project directed the renovation, with plans based on the original design. Building materials include exquisitely detailed cast-in-place concrete and glass curtain wall elements as well as large dramatic skylights. The new space will provide more and improved exhibition space, programming space, more space for public, non-exhibition access to the collection, space for lectures and performances, and closed storage space. Concurrent renovations to the existing building’s fifth-floor Asian galleries will increase exhibition space there by 50%. Gallery space in the new wing is to be used for contemporary art.
