Stuart Lynn Company worked with Renzo Piano and Beyer Blinder Belle on
the historic renovation of the Pierpont Morgan Library. This extensive
building renovation and addition restored the existing museum buildings
while integrating three new structures into the site. The recently completed
building provides space for lectures, films and other public programs.
Constructed of glass and steel and scaled to the original structure, the
modern components defer to the more traditional architecture. The buildings
are joined with glass interstices, providing clear sight lines directly
into the center of the campus. Much of the new space is located underground,
including a new and acoustically superlative auditorium and significant
storage spaces that required extensive and infallible water tight construction
and unusually robust mechanical systems. These new spaces were excavated
out of the bedrock on which the museum sits. The project grafts cutting
edge design and the most advanced technological systems onto the existing
historic structure. It required the interpretation of the architects design
intent at an early stage and at an extremely conceptual level.
