Designed by Rem Koolhaas to transcend and transform shopping into an experience
more public and extroverted, the Prada store located in the former Guggenheim
Annex in Soho accomplishes just that. The project includes a wave shaped
floor plane and a dramatic glass elevator that attract immediate attention
in this airy open 23,000 sf space. Substantial
re-working of the building’s original structure was required to accommodate this
generous open space, with massive new columns and extensive additional bracing
for the walls, some of which were as much as six feet thick. All of this had
to be carefully coordinated with the New York City MTA to accommodate the transit
infrastructure below the building. Many “bells and whistles” were added, including
electrically charged glass and individual micro-climate systems for the fitting
rooms, and a sophisticated control system associated with the overhead moving
displays, making this retail outlet a one-of-a-kind retail space. Stuart-Lynn
provided a cost estimate to verify and confirm the contractor’s pricing for the
project.
