The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Phase II

Williamstown, MA

Phase II of the Clark’s expansion, also designed by Tadao Ando, includes a second, new building: the Exhibition, Visitor, and Conference Center, which will house new special exhibition galleries and provide additional space for conferences.  A new reflecting pool will connect all buildings on the main campus and reorient them towards Stone Hill. Improved visitor amenities include a new shop and restaurant.  The project also includes the renovation of the two existing buildings—the original museum and the gallery space for American art and decorative arts built subsequent to the original museum.  This component of the project is being designed by Selldorf Architects and includes an auditorium and conference center and substantial renovations to the galleries.  The Manton Research Center, currently serving as the main visitor entrance, will be renovated to provide more space for the library and the Clark’s special collection of works on paper.  The project also includes 30 acres of site work and landscape improvements carried out over the full course of the work.
